bFresh Bids Farewell To Fairfield Just Months After Opening

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A new small-format grocery store, which opened its doors only a few months ago in downtown Fairfield, will be closing by the end of April, according to its owner.

The Fairfield location of bfresh will close its doors by the end of the month, according to a statement from the company.

bfresh, which was located behind Plan B Burger, “will close on or before April 30, 2016,” according to a statement from Fresh Formats, which owns the store.

The 8,600-square-foot store — noticeably smaller than supermarkets such as Big Y that can be as large as 70,000 square feet — packed in products from established household mainstays to newer natural food brands.

The company, which also operates a store in a neighborhood of Boston, said the Fairfield location did not work as planned for the concept.

“While the company is pleased with the customer response to other Fresh Formats locations, it became apparent that this particular location was not suitable for the bfresh concept," the company said in a statement.

The company did, however, say they plan to open new locations later this year in Somerville and Brighton, Mass. Both communities are close to downtown Boston.

Company officials said they would help their employees through the transition.

“Fresh Formats is sensitive to the impact this decision will have on its teammates, loyal customers, and the Fairfield community it serves and will support impacted teammates through this transition,” the company said in a statement. “Customers with questions around the Fairfield closing may find information on facebook.com/bfreshfairfield.”

bfresh Fairfield celebrated its official grand opening Friday, Nov. 6, but it opened its doors to the public a few days earlier, the Daily Voice reported.

bfresh is owned by Fresh Formats, which is an Ahold USA company. Stop & Shop, which has two locations in Fairfield, is also an Ahold brand.
