NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A pair of popular women’s clothing stores are among the choices some New Canaan residents would like to see moving into the downtown shopping area.

Several New Canaan Daily Voice readers offered their thoughts on our Facebook page on what they’d like to see come to the shopping district to fill some of the vacancies on Main and Elm streets.

Lori Falcone hopes to see Athleta, a Gap-associated retailer offering women’s casual and sport clothes along with swimwear.

Megan Roland Torgerson hopes New Canaan will be considered by Anthropologie, another popular women’s clothing shop featuring dresses, jeans, shoes and home accessories.

Anna Simonis Grubelic had several ideas. “The Gap or Athleta!! Or Banana Republic…or Tory Burch…”

Recently, New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy said she thought Apple should look into opening an Apple store at 96 Main St., at the corner of Main Street and East Avenue. The storefront has been empty for more than five years after the Wire Whisk moved out.

If wishes were clothing stores then beggars would dress well. The former Wire Whisk location is vacant for a number of reasons (parking, access, low pedestrian traffic, etc.) and savvy national retailers are probably not interested. Before Wire Whisk it was a Pendleton store for years and that never did all that well. Hope for the best!

P.S. I think Cherry Street between Park and Grove should be a hotter retail address because it has parking, sidewalks and other assets.
