Family & Friends Keep Stamford Consignment Store On Track For 3 Generations

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Much has changed in the Stamford community and the business landscape since Pat and Wes Haynes opened Hope Chest Consignments way back in 1960. Even the shop’s focus, which started out by selling miscellaneous items on consignment, has developed over the decades and now concentrates on designer women’s apparel.

"The business changed a few times over the years to accommodate the changing needs and desires of our customers,’’ said Cheryl Liotta, Haynes’ daughter, who now runs the store with her mother and her own daughter, Samantha Perry.

Two years after the business started, they changed its name to Turf Equipment & Supply Co. and sold small engine equipment and miscellaneous clothing on consignment. Over the next 30 years, sales of small-engine machines yielded to women’s clothes, housewares and furniture.

Cheryl joined the business in 1992. Housewares and furniture were replaced by women’s designer clothes, handbags, shoes and jewelry. The store’s name changed to Hope Chest Consignments to better reflect its new direction.

The business now offers the latest in designer label clothes, accessories, handbags, shoes and jewelry. Items that are consigned must be authentic, clean, damage-free, ready to wear and on hangers or folded in bags.

But in that time, the family that owns the store, and the personal service owners give to customers, has never wavered.

“The ever-changing one-of-a-kind items and dedication to one-on-one personalized, friendly service and always with a smile are things shoppers will always get here,’’ Cheryl said. “Many call from our store to tell friends or family about the very special shop they have found. We make every effort to have our customers feel when leaving our store that they have made new friends along with finding a great buy.”

Pat and Cheryl have worked together since 1992. Samantha joined them in 2016, assisting in store operations.

“We are very blessed to have been working with family for so many years,’’ Cheryl said. “Not many people are able to work with other family members.”

Liotta said working with family members has been an enjoyable and rewarding part of the job. “An added pleasure is the many wonderful customers who have become friends over the years,’’ she said.

Many customers who have moved out of the area stop back to visit the store when they return to meet family and friends.

Cheryl said with its strategy set and team in place, Hope Chest Consignments Boutique is set for many more years of selling to Stamford shoppers.
