Barton opened a private orthopedic practice in 1963 on East Avenue in Norwalk that grew into Coastal Orthopaedics, with offices in Norwalk, Darien, Westport and New Canaan. He was a senior partner in the practice, whose partners will take on his patients.
The firm now has 12 surgeons, complete subspecialty coverage, 50 employees and four physician assistants.
Barton was chief of orthopedics at Norwalk Hospital and was assistant chairman of the Surgical Department for 20 years. He introduced both joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery to the community and was the first to do each of these operations at the hospital.
He served on the Norwalk Hospital Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1997. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award and the Scanlon Award for Surgical Innovation by the Department of Surgery at Norwalk Hospital and the William Tracey Philanthropic Award.
Barton has been a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and a member of both the Connecticut State and County Medical Associations.
He graduated from Dartmouth College and New York University College of Medicine. He did his orthopedic training at The Hospital For Joint Diseases in New York City.
Coastal Orthopaedics provides orthopedic care in spine, pediatrics, foot and ankle, sports medicine, shoulder, hand and upper extremity, and total joint replacement surgery.
Offices are located in Norwalk, Darien, Westport and New Canaan. A special walk-in urgent care center known as Coastal Ortho Express is located at iPark Medical Center, 761 Main Ave. in Norwalk.
