Although best known for its denim, Madewell also carries shirts and tops, dresses, non-denim pants and shorts, sweaters, shoes, bags and a variety of accessories, such as jewelry, scarves and sunglasses.
“We are very fashion-forward,” store manager Meg Caro said. “Our style is a classic, clean look that anyone can make their own.”
A division of J. Crew Group Inc., Madewell opened Tuesday at 155 Main St. in the space previously occupied by Coach, which closed at the end of March after a more than 20-year presence in town. The shop is located between its sister store J. Crew and Oscar’s Deli.
In comparison with J. Crew, Caro said Madewell offers more casual styles that appeal to a wider range of women.
Resident Kristen Bowden, who stopped into the store Wednesday afternoon, said she liked what she saw.
“They have a really good selection of jeans,” said Bowden. “And you can tell they’re high quality. I’ll definitely be back.”
The Westport location is the third Madewell to open in the state. The other stores are in Greenwich and the Westfarms Mall in Farmington. Nationwide, there are 57 Madewell locations, Caro said.
The store is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. To reach the store, call 203-222-0014.
