STAMFORD, Conn. -- For Ben Yilmaz, the RadioShack store in the Stamford Town Center has been a convenient place to get supplies for his cellphone repair business, Fix, Color & More.

"I'm here almost every day, getting tools and supplies," he said Monday, holding a cable he had just purchased. But with the news that the company is declaring bankruptcy and closing the mall store, he's not sure what he's going to do.

"I don't know where I'm going to go now. I was told there's a CVS close to the mall, but I don't know," Yilmaz said.

Beset by falling sales and increased competition from Internet-based businesses, the company that was synonymous with electronics and other cool gadgets for generations of people has struggled in the past few years.

On Monday, the inventory that remained in the Stamford Town Center location was being marked down by 30 percent to 40 percent and the walls were becoming more bare as additional customers came in looking for deals.

RadioShack has nearly two dozen stores in Fairfield County, according to its website. But the chain store is closing 1,784 stores nationwide -- 24 stores of them in the Nutmeg State, and seven in Fairfield County. Here are the stores slated to close:

  • Bridgeport: Shoppers Plaza
  • Cos Cob: 160 E Putnam Ave.
  • Danbury: Berkshire Shopping Center
  • Fairfield: 913 Post Road
  • Norwalk (two stores): 595 Connecticut Ave. and 30 Belden Ave.
  • Stamford: Stamford Town Center.

As for his business, Yilmaz said busy has been steady.

"People are always breaking their cellphones," he said with a smile.
