NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Author Suzanne Palmieri, who went from welfare mother to international writer, will be signing her new novel Saturday, May 24, from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Elm Street Books in New Canaan.

“The Witch of Belladonna Bay” asks the question, Are love and magic enough to bring a broken family back together?

Palmieri went from being a young, single mother on welfare and not only made it through college, she also earned a masters in sociology from Fordham University. Now she is the author of four books, with two being released this month.

In “The Witch of Belladonna Bay,” the lead character of Bronwyn is forced to return home to Magnolia Creek, Ala. — a place she hasn’t been since her mother, Naomi, died 14 years earlier — and the troubled family she left behind, according to

With her brother Patrick behind bars for the murder of her childhood friend and her eccentric father, Jackson, at wits end with her 11-year-old niece Byrd, Bronwyn finds herself wrapped up in the mysteries surrounding the murder and little Byrd’s strange ways. As she unravels the secrets behind the murder, long forgotten memories surface, and the magic living quietly inside of her grows stronger, creating an unbreakable bond between her and Byrd—a bond that will define both of their fates forever.

This novel is the followup to Palmieri’s debut, “The Witch of Little Italy.”

Under the name of Suzanne Hayes, she is co-author with Loretta Nyhan of “Empire Girls,” due out later this month, and “I'll Be Seeing You.”

Palmieri lives with her husband and three daughters in New Haven and is working on her next novel. Find her online at .
