Mamaroneck Field Hockey Advances to Final Four

MILTON, N.Y. -- Kingston evened the score, on a penalty corner, with no time remaining in the first half, Saturday, against Mamaroneck.The Tigers went into halftime and, after discussing things with coach John Savage, came out and asserted themselves. Mamaroneck took control of the game and did not allow the Section 9 champion anything.Jessica Gardiner scored on a penalty stroke three minutes in and Mamaroneck went on to a 2-1 victory in a New York State Field Hockey Championship Class A regional final at the Milton Sports Dome.Mamaroneck moves on to its third consecutive final four and sixth since 2004. The Tigers (19-1) will play Liverpool (Section 3) Saturday, 9:30 a.m., at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. The other semifinal has Greene (Section 4) playing Sachem East (Section 11), 11:30 a.m. The semi-final winners meet in the final, Sunday, 10 a.m.“In the first half we came out and played with a lot of energy in the first 10 minutes, then we allowed them to get some corners,” Savage said. “We came out in the second half and played good field hockey.”Gardiner converted her fifth penalty stroke of the season. Jessica Corbin scored 38 seconds into the game for Mamaroneck, off a shot from Alicia Meglio. Veesmer Jordan had Kingston’s goal. The penalty corner was signaled with about five seconds remaining.Savage said Kingston became aggressive in the second half, especially after Mamaroneck scored, resulting in it receiving two yellow cards and two green cards. However, Mamaroneck kept its poise and did not allow itself to be intimidated or drawn into that style.“I give my girls all the credit in the world,” Savage said. “They played their game, got it done and let the scoreboard do the talking for them.”
