Croton's Blue Pig Closes For Winter, Reopens in Spring

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Blue Pig Ice Cream shop will close its doors early for the winter season.

Owner Lisa Moir said an outpouring of community support has allowed her the extra months to heal from an on-the-job injury.

"Number one, a big thank you to all our loyal customers and friends for such a wonderful season. Amidst my personal hardship, we had such an outpouring of support," Moir said.

The Blue Pig will close its doors Sunday and set a tentative spring re-opening date of March 1. During the months the ice cream shop is closed, Moir will undergo a follow-up surgery and physical therapy for a severe broken arm she suffered in June.

"Not only did they support us with their emotions and hearts, people came and did gardening, and people made ice cream, but my numbers went up, which is allowing me to close my doors and do the healing I need to."

As she works in the interim, it's clear the injury is not slowing down the frenetic ice cream shop owner. She hustles from one side of the Blue Pig kitchen to another. She scoops the seeds from baked squash for the next batch of homemade soup, tracks down a pen and pad to jot down a to-do list and plans events for the final week of business. The radio blares; she keeps track of multiple conversations.

"I'm doing a lot better, I'm back to work," Moir said.
