Fairfield Groups To Address Newtown Shooting Anxiety

STAMFORD, Conn. – Two Fairfield County groups are reaching out to help children and their parents deal with issues arising from Friday's massacre in a Newtown school .

A community forum to help parents deal with their anxiety over the Newtown school shooting and find ways to talk about the tragedy with their kids will take place Monday.

The Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut will host the forum from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at their Greyrock Place office in Stamford. Dr. Deborah Matthews, director of crisis services, will be on hand to talk to parents about the shooting.

Matthews will help parents explore ways to deal with the tragedy. Matthews will also help parents explain what happened to their own children and help them determine whether a child should seek professional help.

Kids in Crisis, a Fairfield County counseling center, is also providing help to those affected by the Sandy Hook School shooting. The center has a crisis response team that will be available to anyone throughout the weekend and into next week.

A crisis hotline is also available at 203-327-KIDS.

“Please do not hesitate to reach out to us,” Executive Director Shari Shapiro said. “We are here for you, and together we will get through this horrific atrocity that has shaken Fairfield County, and the nation.”
