Just fewer than 100 runners braved the wet conditions to race three mile around Pear Tree Point in Darien Saturday as part of the annual Bunny Boogie, organized by Club Connecticut. Daniel Lennox of Bedford, NY successfully defended his title, running 16:22, 15 seconds slower than last year, when the conditions were much more favorable.
Lennox wasn't the first person across the finish line, however. Norwalk's Julie Heaphy clocked 18:06, and with the two and a half minute head start given to the women starters, was already through the finish chute as Lennox approached the line.
"I like having the women start first, as it gives me more people to chase down," said Ron Rembaum of Old Greenwich. Rembaum runs the race every year, and once again won the 60 to 69 year-old category in 21:57. For his efforts, he took home a prize unique to the event: a chocolate Easter bunny, which fully half the entrants were awarded this year.
The 99 finishers was the lowest total at the event in 25 years, but was still gratifying to the organizers. "I was surprised more than 50 people ran," said Jeff Gee, the track coach at Wilton High School who helps direct the race.
In fact, the runners enjoyed possibly the best weather of the otherwise washed-out morning. There was no wind, temperatures were in the mid-40s and the rain was varied between a mist and a drizzle until the last finishers came in, when it began to intensify, sending most people to ther cars for shelter.
