Hempstead Man With Gun Slept In Driver's Seat, Stopped On Parkway Ramp: Police

A Long Island man was nabbed after officers said they found him asleep in a car in the middle of a parkway lane.

A 25-year-old Hempstead man was arrested in the early hours of Monday, Oct. 2 after police found him parked on the Southern State Parkway, asleep at the driver's wheel with an illegal gun in the vehicle.

It happened on Monday, Oct. 2 in Hempstead, according to the New York State Police.

Just before 2 a.m., police found 25-year-old Deaquan Dunham of Hempstead asleep behind the wheel of his 2015 Mercedes Benz, which was parked in the right lane of Exit 13 on the Southern State Parkway.

Dunham, who was allegedly intoxicated when police arrested him at the scene.

Officers also discovered that Dunham also had an illegal .22 caliber revolver, which was confiscated.

He is charged with:

  • Driving while intoxicated; and
  • Criminal possession of a weapon.

He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and is due back in court on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
