Kendra and Mike Lee spent early Sunday morning preparing for their first snowstorm in suburbia. We moved here from New York City in May, said Kendra. The snow never seems to stick around there. Not knowing quite what to expect, they made an early morning trip from Darien to the Home Depot in Norwalk to load up on snow shovels and ice melt. Can you tell were first-timers? joked Mike.
They werent alone. By 11 a.m. the stores supply of snowblowers was almost gone, with shovels, sand, and ice melt not far behind. There was a rush right from when the doors opened at 7, said Ken Joyce, who was bringing down more snowblowers from the reserve storage racks. We might be even a little busier than normal for a storm, since lots of the other stores are closed because of the holiday weekend.
Scott Sabbagh of Rowayton had his arms full with three shovels. Two of them are for the kids, he said, referring to his twin 11-year-olds. Time to get them off the X-Box and out shoveling, earning their keep.
In the surprisingly short check out lines Aralda Belic of Stamford maneuvered a cart laden with sand, salt and a few shovels. I dont want to get caught short, he said. As part of his landscaping work, hell be plowing driveways later today. Its going to be a long day, right into the night, he said.
Up the road at ShopRite, every checkout line was open to accommodate the shoppers loading up on staples like bread and milk. The doors opened at 7 and by 7:15 we were packed, said service manager Paru Patel. A lot of people are just doing their usual Sunday shopping early.
Meanwhile, others were trying to get in their aerobic workouts before the snow made the roads dangerous. Duncan Harris of Fairfield joined the usual group of Pequot Runners at the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club in Southport. I remember the blizzard of 96, he said. We all ran the Boston Buildup 10K, drove right home then did nothing but shovel for the next two days.
