WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y - With 77,000 customers still in the dark and power restoration expected to take several days, Con Edison and New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) announced they will distribute dry ice to help customers salvage some of their food.
Dry ice, or frozen carbon dioxide, is colder than regular ice and leaves no residue, so is more effective at keeping food cold. Because it is so cold, though, it has to be handled carefully to avoid frostbite. Tips for safe handling of dry ice:
- Keep dry ice wrapped in newspaper, paper bags, or towels for safety and to extend the life of the dry ice.
- Use gloves or a towel when handling it, and don't let it touch food directly.
- To keep food cool, place the dry ice at the bottom of a refrigerator or insulated container.
- To keep food frozen, put the dry ice on top of the food. If you have to transport dry ice in your car, open the windows to avoid carbon dioxide build-up.
- When you're done with the dry ice, let it evaporate in a well-ventilated place.
- Keep dry ice away from children and pets.
Con Ed will distribute dry ice at the following places:
- Mount Kisco Metro- North Train Station-1 Kirby Plaza in Mount Kisco
- Chappaqua Metro- North Train Station-108 Allen Place in Chappaqua
- Mamaroneck Metro- North Train Station-1 Station Plaza in Mamaroneck
- Yorktown Triangle Shopping Center-20 Triangle Center in Yorktown Heights

NYSEG will distribute dry ice at:
- Bedford Village Fire Department, Village Green from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
- North Salem Ambulance Corps at 14 Daniel Road until 3 p.m. Monday
