You might be surprised to learn that Mt. Kiscos chic boutique Elephants Trunk once favored incense and faded blue jeans over the formal wear it carries now, but thats exactly how much its style has evolved over a 40-year history.
Its been a metamorphosis from a real 1970s emporium to a Fifth Avenue high fashion boutique, said co-owner Robert Brache. Its been a lot of fun along the way and a great learning experience.
Robert and his brother-turned-business partner Rafael have grown up with their clients.
Once they got through with college, they started to get married so we started selling bridal gowns. Then they started to go dinners so we started carrying evening gowns, said Rafael.
Needless to say, they no longer scour Native American reservations for trinkets. The duo instead stock their Main St. location with formal attire by designers such as Stephen Yearick and Jovani.
Since they opened their doors in December of 1971, Rafael has handled the business side of Elephants Trunk while Robert and his wife Monica mostly deal with its creative end as its in-house buyer.
They both now name their target demographic as mostly moms of the bride and groom and moms of the bar and bat mitzvah child. Necklaces, purses and other accessories are available; as well as the natural compliment of mens tuxedo rentals.
Although inventory may have changed over the years, Rafael and Robert Braches understanding of the business has remained the same. They still strive to sell one-of-a-kind pieces other companies cannot match.
A lot of the department stores are carrying the same thing. We find things that are unique, beautiful and of quality but not necessarily trendy, added Robert.
Robert lives in Ossining with his wife Monica and daughter Tanya while Rafael and his wife Janice are residents of Patterson, NY.
