Welcome Teresa Stegner, Somers' New Assessor

SOMERS, N.Y. - As of Monday, Teresa Stegner is Somers' new assessor. She replaces Glenn Droese, who has gone on to another position. Stegner lives in Clinton Corners but said she is happy to make the daily drive down the Taconic State Parkway and back again.

Stegner was the assessor in Dutchess County’s Pleasant Valley for five years before bringing her skills south. She expects the Somers job to "be more challenging. For one thing, there are about 9,100 parcels on the Somers tax map, as opposed to about 3,560 in Pleasant Valley."

She noted there were more agricultural exemptions in Pleasant Valley. "There are only 23 in Somers," she said. And because Somers is a higher value area, there are more tax grievance cases here.

The main responsibility of the town assessor is to calculate the value of properties. The assessor’s calculations are then used to determine the amount of property taxes. The assessor herself does not levy the taxes or determine what they are.

The assessor’s evaluation also provides a guideline for the amount of insurance a property should have. The assessor’s evaluation should not be confused with the market value, which is usually higher.

The Office of the Somers Assessor is located in a separate building, but shares the parking lot with the Elephant Hotel.
