At around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, an officer on patrol in Darien saw three cars traveling on Post Road and then turn onto Salt Box Lane. Police said that because of the recent rash of motor vehicle burglaries and the fact that Salt Box Lane is a small, dead-end street, the officer followed the three cars.
As the officer approached the three cars, one of them, a black Honda Civic, made a sudden U-turn and went back onto the Post Road, police said. The officer stopped the car and determined that the registration was expired.
The driver and passenger were extremely uncooperative and gave several false identities, police said. They were detained and brought back to headquarters, where it was determined that they were 16-year-olds from Bridgeport, police said. Police also discovered that the car they were driving had been stolen out of Stamford, according to police.
They were both charged with interfering with an officer and two counts of third-degree larceny. They were issued juveniles summonses and will appear in Juvenile Court on Sept. 1.
Police said that officers checked the area where the three cars had been last seen and found one of them, a silver Honda Civic, abandoned in the middle of Salt Box Lane. It was discovered that this car was also stolen out of Stamford. The third car was never located.
Police believe that the teens could have played a part in the recent rash of motor vehicles in town, and said that the department will continue its heightened awareness and extra patrols in an attempt to curb future thefts.
"The Department would further like to take the opportunity to remind homeowners to please remember to lock their vehicles at night and take the keys inside," police said. "The vast majority of the motor vehicle burglaries in town are from unlocked cars, just as thefts of motor vehicles are of vehicles with the keys left inside."
