DARIEN, Conn. Ahmet Cilek, 45, of New London was charged Monday night with placing a skimming device on the ATM at the Bank of America on Post Road. A skimming device is an electronic reader used to illegally capture credit card and ATM card information as well as PIN numbers associated with the card.
Police responded at 8:45 p.m. after bank personnel alerted them that they thought the device had been placed there. They conducted a surveillance of the bank with members of the Connecticut Financial Crimes Unit and saw a man acting suspiciously in the area. The man, later identified as Cilek, attempted to elude the police but was eventually detained in the area of Old King's Highway North and Brookside Road, officers said.
Police said Cilek is has committed similar crimes in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He has an extensive criminal history in Connecticut, Virginia and New York.
He was charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit identity theft, unlawful reproduction of a credit card, fraudulent use of an automated teller machine, criminal attempt at third-degree larceny and unlawful use of a scanning device. He was unable to post a $100,000 bond and was transported to Stamford Superior Court. His next court date is scheduled for June 30.
