Mary Chapin Carpenter Rides In

For composer and performer Mary Chapin Carpenter, there are many compelling reasons to stay close to home:  her husband, Tim Smith, her 82 acre Charlottesville, Virginia farm populated with her menagerie of pets, including six dogs. But, this hugely talented country/folk singer-songwriter also feels the gravitational pull of "getting on a bus, going on tour and connecting to the world through music," as she told the NY Times. Luckily, she rides that bus right into Ridgefield Playhouse's parking lot on August 17 for a concert that will re-establish her with her Connecticut cult.

Carpenter's recently-released album, "The Age of Miracles" was inspired by her brush with death in 2007, when a pulmonary embellism shattered her lungs. As David Belcher wrote in the Times, "The work is not steeped in songs about bouncing back from tragedy or platitudes about lessons learned. Ms. Carpenter, who knows her way around a dance number, turns sadness into an exhilarating experience."A Princeton, New Jersey native, Carpenter's musical trajectory took her from the East Coast to Nashville where she blew the doors off with "State of the Heart," her 1989 album. Awards (five Grammys among them) and a rabid fanbase followed. Her textured music, with its delicately offered emotions and colorful stories, make her a performer to catch. Besides, who knows when her bus will stop here again? Carpenter's performance begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $65. Special guest is Catie Curtis.
