Body Found In Park Likely Missing Irvington Woman

This story has been updated to reflect Irvington Police Chief Michael Cerone's comments.

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Police believe the body of missing 84-year-old Betty Iannarelli may have been found Sunday north of Matthiessen Park on private property.

The body has been taken to the Westchester Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy and identification.

Police Chief Michael Cerone said a groundskeeper found the deceased person in a wooded marshland north of Matthiessen Park around 3:15 p.m.

Cerone could not estimate when the Westchester Medical Examiner's Office will positively identify the body as that of missing Betty Iannarelli, saying it was “in the medical examiner's hands.”

Cerone said police strongly believed it was Iannarelli based on the evidence that they found at the scene.

“We offer our condolences to the Iannarelli family,” Cerone said on behalf of the Irvington Police Department. “...We're very sorry about the outcome here.”

Iannarelli was last seen on August 5 at 1:55 a.m. on a surveillance camera walking up Main St. in an aqua blue housedress and flip-flops. Iannarelli suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

Police have been searching for Iannarelli since she disappeared. Iannarelli's family has been notified of the discovery.
