NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Come explore New Canaan's "best-kept secret garden" on Monday, Feb. 29, with a talk, slideshow and plant samples of Lee Garden.

Formally known as the Olive and George Lee Memorial Garden, it's located on Chichester Road. It encompasses three acres of woodland garden and meandering paths. It was originally owned and designed by George Lee, an azalea and rhododendron enthusiast.

Lee left his garden to the New Canaan Beautification League in 1978 and club volunteers have nurtured this town treasure since then. Located at 89 Chichester Rd., the garden is open from dawn to dusk every day. Parking is available behind the fence, and leashed dogs are allowed.

The talk will be given by Faith Kerchoff , co-president and longtime member of the New Canaan Beautification League. She is also co-chair of Lee Garden and has studied the writings and slides of George Lee and worked in the garden for the past 27 years.

In addition to a slide presentation, there will be live plant samples to see and learn about as well. You won't just learn about a unique town destination, but also about what might work in your own shady spots at home.

The program will describe the beautiful plants, unusual ground covers and small bulbs that thrive in the shade of Lee Garden. While the May profusion is a perfect time for snapping photos, there is actually something new and in bloom almost every day of the growing season.

The talk will begin at 9:30 a.m., at Lapham Community Center, Waveny Park, in New Canaan. In order to make sure you have a seat, RSVP by calling 203-972-0895 or emailing Faithkerchoff@hotmail.com.
