If you’re looking for something fun, and educational, to do with the kids or out-of-door guests over the holiday break, take them backstage to watch aquarium staff feed its resident sharks, stingrays and seals.
The little ones – and grown-ups – can hand-feed morsels to other marine critters such as horseshoe crabs and diamondback terrapins (turtles).
“Feeding Time” participants get fed too; the program starts at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28 with a hot breakfast in the aquarium’s Cascade Café.
Exclusive access to morning rounds at the aquarium is “perfect for anyone who is curious about a career in marine biology or animal husbandry,” said aquarium spokesman Dave Sigworth.
“But it’s also just plain fun for anyone who wants to enhance their experiences here at The Maritime Aquarium beyond a typical visit,” he added.
Children must be at least 5 years old to participate.
Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for children ages 5-12 ($45 and $20 for members). The cost includes admission to the aquarium at 10 a.m.

The aquarium is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to educate visitors about – and to create stewards for – Long Island Sound.
It accomplishes this by allowing them to get close to more than 250 species that are native to the sound and its watershed, including sharks, seals, sea turtles, river otters, jellyfish and other animals.
The aquarium also offers hands-on educational programs and displays and cruises on the sound and has the state's largest IMAX movie theater.
