Another meeting for Wilton's Planning and Zoning Commission, another approval of a package store. The latest came at the commission's meeting on Monday night and was the fourth since the town allowed the sales of alcoholic beverages last November.
The approved application was for Wilton Wine Search to move into 28 Center Street. At its previous meeting on June 14, the P&Z decided to hold off on a decision until it knew the exact square footage of the space.
During the public hearing before Monday's regular meeting, the commission heard from Clarissa Cannavino, an attorney for Krysztof Zackiewicz of Norwalk, who is applying to open a package store at 39 Danbury Road.
The commission had previously tabled the public hearing on this application because it still had questions about parking and the distance the store would be from the nearest school. The exact distance between Montessori School and the location of the store is almost 1,500 feet, which satisfies the 500-foot limit.
Commissioner Marilyn Gould believed no additional parking is needed because she has never seen a lack of parking at the location. "My guess is that the five spaces in front at any one time could handle the liquor store needs," Gould said. The commission put off deciding on the application until the next meeting.
By state law, the town can have up to seven package stores, based on the formula put in place by the State Liquor Commission. The statute says each town can have one liquor store per 2,500 people. The Planning and Zoning Commission can only look at land-use considerations.
