Microsoft Word Part I Class at New Canaan Library: 9:30 a.m. Learn the fundamentals of Microsoft Office's Word 2007, a word processing software with lots of bells and whistles. New Canaan Library, 151 Main St.

New Canaan Nature Center Winter Solstice Celebration: 5 p.m. Celebrate the lights at the Nature Center on the "darkest" day of the year. The sun is the farthest away from the northern hemisphere. Wine, cheese, hot cocoa and treats under the twinkling lights in the greenhouse. New Canaan Nature Center, 144 Oenoke Ridge.

Saturday

smallWORK Art Exhibit at Carriage Barn Arts Center:  11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  An exhibition of small works at affordable prices in all media except photography selected by the Carriage Barn Gallery Committee.  Intimately scaled artwork, sometimes jewel-like in its presentation, beckons the viewer to come hither for a closer look. Diminutive-sized small works of art often belie their subtle power and singular appeal. Carriage Barn Arts Center, Waveny Park.

Sunday 

Statewide Vigil For Victims of Newtown: 6 p.m. Residents are invited to take part in a statewide vigil honoring those lost on Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School. God’s Acre, Main Street.
