What To Do In New Canaan This Weekend

Friday, Dec. 14 Holiday Concert with the Saxe Chamber Players At New Canaan Library: 3:30 p.m. The Saxe Chamber Players, under the direction of Janet Rosen, present their annual Holiday Concert in the Lamb Room. Filled with traditional favorites and special performances, this concert is delightful for children of all ages, their parents and grandparents. Musicians and their guests are invited to bring a new or gently used children's book to donate to the Carver Foundation of Norwalk. New Canaan Library, 151 Main St.

Turtle Island Quartet at Silvermine Arts Center: 7 p.m. A glorious fusion of jazz and classical, the Turtle Island Quartet has been the very definition of American chamber music for more than 25 years. From stages across the globe to international airwaves, and winner of two recent Grammy awards for Best Classical Crossover, this group is the most acclaimed ensemble of its kind. This concert showcases the music of the Festival of Lights, from the songs of Hanukkah to the music of India’s Diwali, to the old English carols and Scottish reels of the 16th century. The Turtle Island Quartet explores the timeless music that has been an integral part of winter holiday celebrations for centuries. The program also features music from Vince Guaraldi’s beloved “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” as well as revisiting famous classical gems that have become so indelibly tied to the holiday season. Saturday, Dec. 15 New Canaan Nature Center Winter Wonderland: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come and be transported into a whole new world as the New Canaan Nature Center transforms into a "Winter Wonderland" filled with fun and exciting seasonal activities for the entire family. Come down the lane and enjoy the warm festive feel the Nature Center puts on this time of year. The fun includes sledding and angel making on manmade snow, cookie decorating at Santa’s Bake Shop, a holiday model train, a wacky winter scavenger hunt, holiday stories, crafts and carols, as well as chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Adults are free. Entry is $8 for children of Nature Center members and $12 for children of non-members. New Canaan Nature Center, 144 Oenoke Ridge.

Sunday, Dec. 16 Author Jane Yolen at New Canaan Library: 4 p.m. Jane Yolen, award-winning author of more than 250 books will be at the library for a poetry reading for adults.  She will be reading passages from her recently published memoir, “Ekaterinoslav: One Family's Passage to America”. The program is presented in partnership with the Smith College Club of Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk, and Wilton. Elm Street Books will have copies of Yolen's book for purchase and signing.
