Roy officially opened Aladin Indian Bistro on Westport Avenue on Aug. 1. The bar and restaurant uses traditional Indian spices and ingredients to make healthy cuisine aimed at American palettes.
“Small plates, salads and exciting new Tandoor preparations of locally raised vegetables, meat and seafood are the basis to this new style of Indian bistro fare,” he says on the restaurant’s website.
Roy got his start as a chef in his native India, where he was made the executive chef of the Taj Hotel Group in Calcutta at age 22. His previous ventures in the U.S. include Darien’s Coromandel, Brick Lane Curry House in New York and Tava Regional Indian Cuisine in Stamford.
For his Norwalk spot, Roy says he designed a menu with “a lighter and more healthful approach to this vibrant and flavorful cuisine.”
Along with lunch and dinner dining, the bistro also offers “lunch boxes” with prix-fixe options for takeout, including chicken tikka masala and kebabs. Roy has also planned to host live music on Thursday evenings and to serve brunch specials each Sunday.
Aladin’s specialties include tropical green mango salad with market fresh greens and crispy papadam, coconut and pepper shrimp, Bengali fish curry with tomato and eggplant, steamed lamb shank with clove and nutmeg and saffron-infused yogurt sauce, and crispy okra with red onion, cilantro and green chili. Aladin Indian Bistro is located at 36 Westport Ave., Norwalk. The restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily for lunch and from 5 to 10 p.m. weekdays and 5 p.m. to midnight weekends for dinner.
