National Honesty Day was launched in the early 1990s by author M. Hirsh Goldberg, while he was writing the first draft of his book, "The Book of Lies: Fibs, Tales, Schemes, Scams, Fakes and Frauds That Have Changed The Course of History and Affect Our Daily Lives." Goldberg was also press secretary to the governor of Maryland, according to National Day Calendar.
Honesty Day is a campaign for prevention against political lies, and every April 30, Goldberg gives honesty awards to companies, organizations, groups and individuals that have remained truthful to their people.
A recent Gallup poll found that nurses are the most honest people, compared to car salesmen and members of Congress, who are among the least honest people.
The last day in April was chosen for Honesty Day in contrast to the foolishness of April Fool's Day on April 1.
