Opal the rescued pit bull mix was named the fastest dog at the Westport Dog Festival, winning a year’s supply of dog food and bragging rights for besting a field of more than 100 at the 2nd annual festival this month.

“She just loves to run,” said Opal’s proud owner, Chelsea Massimin of Danbury. “She has run the course before, but never won. This is great.”

Garavel Auto Group, sponsors of the popular obstacle course, presented the prize to Opal, who ran the course in a blistering 10.4 seconds, a full second over her closest competitor.

Organized by the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce, the dog festival drew an estimated 2,800 people — plus more than 700 dogs — to Winslow Park for a day celebrating all things canine.

Matthew Mandell, the chamber’s executive director, said the obstacle course will definitely be back next year. For more information, go to www.westportwestonchamber.com/dogs.
