Have Items To Donate? Here's Where To Go In Fairfield County

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Spring is a time for cleaning  -- and donating. But where's best to give away toys, clothes, books, etc. to those in need?

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters: Will pick up a variety of household items. Details: 877-399-2570 or go to the website at www.donatebbbsf.org
  • Hopeline Pregnancy Resource Center, Stamford, Danbury, Bridgeport: Accepts items for newborns to up to a year, mainly diapers, formula, car seats (if brand new), bottles, blankets, baby hats, and clothing. Office hours are all different so please call first before dropping off, most offices open  9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Details: 13 Rose St., Danbury, 203-207-4673; 4749 Main St., Bridgeport, 203-540-5225 and 838 High Ridge Rd., Stamford, 203-890-9229, www.hopelineprc.org/.
  • Family Resource Center at Cesar A. Batalla School, Bridgeport: Donations accepted for drop-off between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you have something heavier, call and they can try to work with you for pick-up. Details: 606 Howard Ave, 203-579-8526.
  • Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, Greenwich: Opened in 1921, this nonprofit thrift shop is sponsored by the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary. It will accept household items, china, glassware, toys, books, magazines, records (CD’s and videos), toys, and furniture. Donation hours are Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.You can also schedule furniture pick-up. Details:199 Hamilton Ave., 203-863-3933
  • Laurel House Treasure Hunters Thrift Store, Stamford. Treasure Hunters relies on contributions from donors throughout lower Fairfield County and will gladly pick up large donations from homes and offices (subject to availability of truck and driver). They also accept items at the store (though no books). Drop off is 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Details: 501 Summer St, 203-327-7334.
  • Lifebridge Community Services, Bridgeport: You can donate anything and everything here except electrical -- housewares, toys, baby clothes are welcome. Drop off only. Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 pm. Details: 475 Clinton Ave., 203-368-4291, www.lifebridgect.org/.
  • Mothers for Others, Greenwich: Accepts gently used baby items (i.e. baby swings, strollers, high chairs, bouncy seats and pack-n-plays) as well as disposable diapers (any size, newborn through 5) No car seats, opened diaper packages, baby baths, toilet seats, cribs or mattresses. Items may be dropped off Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, from 10 a.m.to noon at their office on the 2nd floor of Second Congregational Church.   • Person-to-Person, Darien, Norwalk: In Darien non-perishable foods are accepted Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is also a clothing center where seasonally appropriate gently used or new items for all ages and all sizes is accepted. Don't have to call ahead; just go, but please do not leave outside when they are not open. In Norwalk, there is a food pantry only and donations accepted Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Details: 76 S. Main St., Norwalk, 203-939-1650; 1864 Post Rd., 203-655-0048, https://p2phelps.org/.
