The gesture is in response to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School this month, and Jennifer Herring, president of the aquarium, said in a statement that the center hopes it can help the Newtown community in some capacity. Numerous studies have shown that interactions with animals can be especially relaxing and relieving in times of stress.

“We at The Maritime Aquarium are heartbroken by the events of Dec. 14 and strongly feel the need to reach out,” Herring said. “Ours is a small but heartfelt gesture that we hope will help the people of Newtown.”

Newtown residents are asked to bring proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill, when they visit. Additionally, Newtown educators and the town’s first responders who are employed by the town are asked to bring a form of work identification.

“Perhaps our offer will mean some nice ‘quality time’ for Newtown families," Herring said. "However it may help, we would be honored.”

The offer is not available for online tickets.
