Now in its eighth year, the annual exhibit allows Westport Arts Center member artists the chance to submit their work for review by noted curators from across the country. For this year’s exhibit, curator Susan Cross of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art reviewed submissions from more than 100 artists to select the final 12, the arts center announced.
“I was impressed both by the quality and diversity of the submissions to SOLOS 2013,” Helen Klisser During, director of visual arts at the Westport Arts Center, said in a statement. “We were very fortunate to have one of the world's top curators act as juror. Ms. Cross has an amazing eye and was very thoughtful in her final selection, which could not have been easy.”
Among the artists chosen for the exhibit are Westporters Nell Bernegger, Jana Ireijo, Steven Parton and Tammy Winser. Other artists chosen were Eduardo Agelvis of Norwalk, Elizabeth Gourlay of Chester, Peter Konsterlie of Bridgeport, Elizabeth Nagle of New Canaan, Joel Werring of Redding, Linda Kuehne of Pound Ridge, N.Y., and Brooklyn, N.Y., residents Gail Rothschild and Becky Yazdan.
SOLOS 2013 will open Friday with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
Several exhibit-related programs and events will be held, including lunchtime discussions with the artists. The exhibit will run through Sunday, June 2.
