NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan will dispense naloxone (Narcan), the life-saving antidote to opioid overdoses, to people who attend community training sessions planned for this month, October and November.

Silver Hill has teamed up with the Greenwich Community Health Improvement Partnership and Communities 4 Action to educate individuals about the risks of heroin and other opioid use and the potentially life-saving benefits of naloxone.

The sessions will teach those in attendance how to identify an opioid overdose and administer naloxone.

According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), overdose deaths involving prescription opioids have quadrupled since 1999 as have the sales of opioid analgesic medications.

More than 165,000 people died of prescription opioid overdoses from 1999 to 2014 in the United States, the CDC said.

According to one published study, between 1996 and 2010, naloxone reversed more than 10,000 overdoses in the community.

Studies suggest that widespread access to naloxone could reduce the opioid overdose death rate by as much as 50 percent.

The confirmed training sessions are as follows:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 28, noon to 1:00 p.m., at Greenwich Library.
  • Wednesday, Oct 5, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m., at Greenwich Town hall.
  • Thursday, Nov. 3, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m., at Greenwich Town Hall.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 9, noon - 1:00 p.m., at Greenwich Library.

To register for any of these sessions, call (888)-305-9253 or click here and search “Narcan.”
