Novelist Sets Thriller In New Canaan Yoga Class In 2008 Financial Crisis

WILTON, Conn. — When Ann Lineberger moved from the city to the suburbs, she found herself in a suburban yoga class for the first time. And she was intrigued by the interactions between the women in her class and their instructor.

Ann Lineberger penned a novel "The Adjustments," which takes place in a town based on Wilton and New Canaan.

“The man running it is a handsome man, and I was just shocked to see the students' reactions to him,” said Lineberger, a Wilton resident. Some of the women were flirting with him, even though most of them were wearing wedding rings.

The experience inspired her latest work, “The Adjustments,” which is set in a fictional town based on Wilton and New Canaan. It centers around a yoga class and its “sexy and mysterious Yogi Jack” at a time when many families were feeling the stress of the 2008 financial crisis.

The title comes from the adjustments that instructors such as Yogi Jack make to students in class, which they can make for a variety of purposes.

“It can either be done in a helpful way or it can be done as a way for the instructor to make contact with the student beyond what would happen in the class otherwise,” she said.

Many of the novel’s characters come to yoga class only to see Jack and to experience his seductive in-class adjustments. Their desire is fueled by loneliness or boredom — or perhaps the stress of the financial meltdown.

Despite the novel’s serious backdrop, Lineberger hopes her audience considers it to be a fun and entertaining read.

“It’s not a serious book,” Lineberger said. “It’s supposed to be entertaining and funny, but it touches on these bigger issues that aren’t really funny if you’re in the middle of them.”

The novel will appeal to fans of shows such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Revenge," according to a press release.

And for a sequel? Lineberger is hard at work on another book set to take place on a town based on Westport.

Lineberger has a master’s degree in journalism and mass communication from New York University and an associate’s degree from the New York School of Interior Design. She is also an interior designer and Halstead Property Realtor.
