Born and raised in Huntington, W. Va., Helen attended Marshall College — now Marshall University — along with Joe, who was Ad’s brother.

Her best friend started dating Joe. They got married, and Helen attended the wedding, where she met Ad, who lived in New Canaan.

Ad set his sights on Helen, and soon they began dating, too. They had a long distance relationship with visits and letters back and forth. And Helen invited Ad to her homecoming.

Ad later proposed to Helen in Mead Park in town. Helen and Ad were married on Oct. 27, 1951. “I always said I was Ad's birthday present because he was born on the 29th,” Helen said.

Helen and Ad built their home on Garibaldi Lane. She now lives at The Inn, which is part of the Waveny LifeCare Network.
