Performances of "The Governor’s Son" will run from Friday, Feb. 21 to Saturday, March 8, at the Powerhouse Performing Arts Center in Waveny Park.

"This exciting political thriller tells the story of Richard Meeks, the son of a powerful governor, who has won six terms in Congress by scrupulously following his father’s orders to 'do nothing.' His reputation for 'going along' has not gone unnoticed and he’s now running for the Senate and, if his mother Vera, the matriarch of the family dynasty has her way, possibly as a candidate for vice president. Questions arise concerning the Governor’s methods in advancing Richard’s career but Richard is reluctant to confront his intimidating father’s past actions."

After years of acting and directing local theatre, Gordon began writing while recuperating from surgery in 2002.

“Since then, I’ve written 40 plays and most have been produced — throughout the United States and Europe — and almost all have been published," Gordon said, noting that the inspiration for writing The Governor’s Son was watching how our politicians change while in office. “I think it’s the things that cause people to change (for better or worse) that gave me the idea for the Richard Meeks character.”

The show also marks the directorial debut of veteran actor Tom Butterworth who has appeared in numerous TPNC productions.

“It’s a joy and a privilege for my directing debut to be the premiere of an immensely compelling play, with top-flight actors, and the creative collaboration with Jim Gordon has been exhilarating," Butterworth said.

Performances are Feb. 21, 22, 28 at 8 p.m.; Feb, 23 at  2:30 p.m.; March 1, 7, 8 at 8 p.m.; March 2 at 2:30 p.m.
