New Canaan Artists Honored In Brushwork Exhibition

ROWAYTON, Conn. -- The Rowayton Arts Center has announced the winners of the Brushwork Exhibition.

Susan Spivack, of Westport, won first place in watercolor in the exhibition, currently on display at the Rowayton Arts Center. Guests can view Spivack's piece at the gallery through Aug. 30. 

In addition to first place, she will be awarded the Walter Brooks Memorial Prize, given every year to the best watercolor.

Other winners in the exhibit included:

  • Best in Show: Pilar Joanna Garra (New Canaan) “Beauty in White Dust”
  • Oil: first place, Ron Taylor (Stratford) “Caribbean Sailor;" second place, Milan Chilla (Rowayton) “My Senorita;" third place, Hu Lindsay (Norwalk) “Urban Bridge"
  • Honorable mentions: Katherine Draper (Norwalk) “Marsh Inlet;” Antoinette Vardarmis (New Canaan) “Up a Tree”
  • Watercolor: first place, Susan Spivack (Westport) “Sandra;” second place, Stan Pastore (Norwalk) “Saranac Lake;” third place, James Ryan (Greenwich) “Lily of the Valley”
  • Honorable mention: Veronica Cassel-Vaz (Shelton) “Peonies from My Garden”
  • Acrylic: 1st Place: Bevi Bullwinkel (Fairfield) “Facing East II” 2nd Place: Peter Thoren (Darien) “Out the Black Porch Door” 3rd Place: Jeannine Soper (Rowayton) “Sheffield Island”
  • Honorable mention: Pam Davis (Norwalk) “Skye Associate"

Professor Roland Becerra of the University of New Haven selected the winning artwork from 92 entries. Eunice Roy, of Norwalk, was chairperson and Susan Leggit, also of Norwalk, was co-chair.

For more than 50 years, the Rowayton Arts Center has been serving the community as a cultural hub for regional artists to exhibit and sell their work, exchange ideas and participate in classes and workshops.

The RAC Gallery and Art School is located at 145 Rowayton Ave. on the banks of the Five Mile River in Rowayton. The gallery is open from noon to 5p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays.
