NORWALK, Conn. Mayor Richard Moccia has a new car but he's not going to go very far in it it would be hard to get into.
The child's peddle car is sitting in Moccia's office and will stay there until Jan. 20, when someone attending the 2012 Mayor's Ball buys it in the silent auction. His staff is hard at work on the event, and City Clerk Erin Halsey says there have been numerous donations.
Contributors include Wusthoff, Connie B's Boutique, the Norwalk Adventure Boot Camp for Women, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and BMW of Darien, which donated the car currently serving as a decoration in the mayor's office.
Proceeds go to the Child Guidance Center of Mid Fairfield County. "It's a really good cause," Halsey said, remarking that ticket sales have been good.
Tickets are $85. The event features a cocktail reception, dinner and dancing, and Halsey says there are "very few speeches."
"People in this city work really hard," Halsey said. "This is a time for them to let their hair down and hula hoop."
Déeor this year is black and white, with red roses on the tables for an accent of color. Moccia said his wife Barbara is pitching in on the decorations for the first time, now that she is retired. Staff members Sally Johnson, Rebbeca Kovacs and Maritza Alvarado are also busy with preparations.
