Girl Scouts Launch A New Cookie Season In New Canaan

NORWALK, Conn. -- The annual delivery of Girl Scout cookies descended on Norwalk on Saturday, drawing troop members from across lower Fairfield County to Norden Park to collect their iconic desserts for delivery to excited customers.

One of the 23 locations statewide delivering nearly 2 million boxes of cookies, the East Norwalk pickup spot was responsible for distributing to Girl Scout troops in Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, Norwalk, New Canaan, Weston, Wilton and Westport.

The cookies were shipped in on four tractor-trailers, and an assembly line system of distribution was set in place.  Susan Pratt, product sales manager for Girl Scouts of Connecticut, said that by Saturday afternoon, more than 15,000 cases of cookies had been distributed at the state’s largest delivery depot in Norwalk.

To ensure a streamlined delivery process, each troop was given a time slot to arrive and collect their cookies.

“We have 276 troops coming to Norwalk get their cookies,” Pratt said. A web of cones, signs and loading zones outlined exactly where scouts were able to find their pre-counted loads.

The pickup is routinely held in Norwalk, due to the city’s central location, operating out of Norden for the past six years.

“They have been phenomenal throughout the whole process,” Pratt said of Norden. “From obviously letting us use their parking lot, to giving us access to their bathroom, which sounds kid of silly, but you need it when you are here all day,” the Girl Scouts appreciate their hosts’ generosity.

The process of moving the cookies from the trailers to vans and cars also received incredible help from community members, Pratt said. In addition to scouts and their families, “we have high school students and Confirmation candidates who have really been the backbone of our work today.”

Starting early Saturday, Pratt was hoping to have all the boxes packed and distributed by 3 p.m., an astonishing feat of manpower.

Despite being one of the coldest winters in recent memory, volunteers worked under brilliant sun in Norden’s largely ice-free lot.  With cookie sales kicking off immediately, the first step in the truck-to-stomach chain is complete.

Each box of Girl Scout cookies costs $4, except Toffee-tastics, which are $5 per box. For more information on Girl Scouts of Connecticut and cookie booth locations, visit www.gsofct.org.
