Hiram Rick Moody III who grew up in New Canaan, turns 53 on Saturday. The novelist and short story writer was born Oct. 18, 1961, in New York City

His first novel “Garden State” won the Pushcart Editor's Choice Award. He is best known for the 1994 novel “The Ice Storm,” which brought widespread acclaim, became a bestseller and was made into a feature film of the same title.

He  won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir, the Addison Metcalf Award, the Paris Review Aga Khan Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2012 he also won Fernanda Pivano Award in Italy.

His work has appeared in The New Yorker, Esquire, Conjunctions, Harper's, Details, The New York Times, and Grand Street.

Many of his works have been praised by fellow writers and critics alike, and in 1999 The New Yorker chose him as one of America's most talented young writers, listing him on their "20 Writers for the 21st Century" list.

In 2001, Moody co-founded the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award and is a co-host, along with One Ring Zero's Michael Hearst, for the 18:59 Podcast series.

Moody has taught at the State University of New York at Purchase and Bennington College, and currently teaches at New York University.
