Ness is also a member of St. Michael's.
Originally from South Dakota, he was ordained in 1960 and was called to the Bruce-Exeland Lutheran parish where he served until the Evangelical Lutheran Church called him to the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps.
While in the military, he served with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky.
He later served with the 101st in Vietnam.
Later, he served with the 24th Infantry Division in Germany and in Fort Riley, Kan.
The army sent Ness to the University of Indiana to study Adult Education and Philosophy before an assignment at the Army Chaplain School in Fort Hamilton, N.Y.
After the assignment at the Chaplain School, where he was responsible for program design and development of all courses of instruction, Ness was assigned as a student at the Army War College in Carlyle, Pa.
His utilization assignment was as director of the leadership department at the Command and General Staff College in Fort Levenworth, Kan.
His last assignment was as Director of Plans, Programs and Policies for the Army Chaplain Corps at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Ness retired from the Army after 25 years of service and began his ministry at Zion Lutheran on Staten Island, where he served nearly five years.
He was called to Trinity Lutheran in Kingston, N.Y., and served for 14 years.
He retired at the age of 71 in September 2005.
All are welcome to hear Ness preach at 10 a.m. Sundays at St. Michael's, 5 Oenoke Ridge. Kid Time Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m.
