New Canaan Community Invited To Check Out Grace Farms

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Grace Farms, which describes itself as a new center for arts, nature, community, justice and faith in New Canaan, will celebrate its grand opening with a Community Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Admission is free. Visitors are urged to consider donating nonperishable items to the New Canaan Food Pantry drive.

Limited parking is available on the site. Free off-site parking is available at the Train Station Commuter/Lumberyard Lot at 244 Elm St. in New Canaan and at Oakridge Commons/Greenwich Produce Lot at 200 Oakridge Drive, South Salem, N.Y.

Free continuous shuttle service will run between these lots and Grace Farms starting at 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the scenery, take tours, attend dance performances or a lecture, and listen to a variety of concerts. The art exhibits will be open. The Community Day will include a cookout and a variety of family-friendly events.

You can explore the River building, barns, grounds, and commissioned installations and artworks by Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Teresita Fernández, Beatriz Milhazes, and Susan Philipsz.

Activities will include an artist-led drum-making workshop, bulb planting, story time, sports, and more. 

The Red Trouser Show featuring circus arts and street entertainment will make roving theater performances.

A community barbecue will serve up family-friendly fare from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Live music from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. will include Brazilian-influenced jazz by Anne Boccoto Ensemble.

Krishna Patel, Grace Farms Foundation Director of Justice Initiatives, and Conor Grennan, Founder of Next Generation Nepal, will hold a "Trafficking Conversation" at noon. 

Insights from Pritzker Prize-winning SANAA architects, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa will be offered up in a Design Talk at 1 p.m.

A poetry reading at 1:45 p.m. will launch the Grace Farms Foundation's commemorative book, "and souls are candles," edited by Christian Wiman.

At 2:45 p.m. will be a screening and discussion of the premier of Ben Stamper's "Don't Foil My Plans," a documentary about autism, creativity, and coming of age.

A collaborative performance will round out the day at 3:45 p.m. as Michael McElroy and the Broadway Inspirational Voices — featuring Tony Award-winning performers from "The Book of Mormon," "Rent" and "Motown" — with renowned dancer Matthew Rushing.
