NEW CANAAN, Conn. ? The following letter is from New Canaan Fire Marshal Fred Baker.
Recently, the New Canaan firefighters arranged for a donation of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors from First Alert Corporation. These detectors were offered free of charge to New Canaan residents, and I was shocked at how quickly they were gone.
Now, a second round of detectors has been obtained from First Alert, at a much reduced price, thanks again to the firefighters generous donation.
The importance of properly installed and operating smoke and CO detectors cannot be overstated. The early warning that is provided can ? and does ? make a difference between life and death. Every day.
I read reports daily from the United States Fire Administration detailing the fire fatalities across the country, and the frustrating part is that many of these deaths could have been easily prevented. Please take advantage of this great program. Just stop by fire headquarters, and firefighters will give the detectors (limit of 3 per household, please). If you need help, someone will even come to your home and install the detectors for you. If you already have detectors, please check to make sure they are working. If they are more than 10 years old, it is also recommended that they be replaced or upgraded.
For questions about smoke and CO detectors, please contact the New Canaan Fire Marshals Office at 203-594-3030.
