Mill Pond will be jumping with young fishermen Saturday as New Canaan lures them in with a well-known rod-and-reel tradition.
Kids will try to catch the biggest and best trout during the annual Fishing Derby at Mill Pond, located at East and Millport avenues. The fishing will start at 9 a.m. Recreation Director Steve Benko said it's a chance for youngsters in town to try their hand at fishing.
The Department of Public Works stocked the pond Thursday with 150 pounds of rainbow trout. Its a nice event for the spring to start with, Benko said. Weve helped out for years, and its a fun thing to do.
The Police Benevolent Association held the event for years, and it was named for former New Canaan Police Officer George Cogswell. The event took a brief hiatus but was restarted about three years ago after Mill Pond was dredged and then refilled.
Children who are 15 years old and younger can fish for free during the derby. Prizes will be awarded in several categories, including for the first boy and first girl to catch a fish and the largest fish caught.
Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.
