NEW CANAAN, Conn. Attention, men of New Canaan: Youre still procrastinating.
Valentines Day is Tuesday, but Bon Fleur florist shop owner Madeline MacAnka is expecting many husbands and boyfriends to realize it Monday.
Im not trying to be mean and generalize, but guys just dont plan ahead, said MacAnka, helping the staff of the New Canaan shop prepare roses and other flowers for the big celebration of love. Its up to the guys to get it done.
The staff at Bon Fleur was getting ready for a deluge of customers on Monday and Tuesday, dethorning roses and placing flowers in buckets of water to ensure theyll be ready for pickup or delivery. In between the work, the women nibbled on sweets from employee Carrie Wilcox, who brought in a large heart-shaped box of chocolates. Monday will be the big day, MacAnka said. Were getting everything organized so we can be ready.
So far, the pace of Valentines Day orders has been slow. MacAnka said about a quarter of her business Friday was related to the holiday. Most callers and visitors were making regular orders of the Get Well Soon, Congratulations or Good Luck variety.
When the guys or in some cases, women call, they are asking for the classic set of a dozen red roses. Its definitely it, MacAnka said. Some will ask for a different color of roses. Some women dont like red roses, a lot still like them. We will sell a lot.
A dozen roses in a vase will cost $135 at Bon Fleur, $10 more than the shop usually charges. But MacAnka warns men to make their move soon instead of taking a chance at the last minute. You cant come in on Valentines Day at 3 p.m. Thats a big risk."
