The Young Women’s League  of New Canaan is hosting Couture for a Cause on Friday, May 9, at the Loading Dock in Stamford.

Couture for a Cause raised $32,000 in last year’s event and the YWL is aiming higher as they seek to raise $50,000.

Each year, the YWL aligns its charitable giving with an alternating three-year theme based on community, children and women. Local organizations are welcome to submit grant requests, and then the YWL notifies the major awardees in the fall. The grant amounts, however, are determined in the spring after the YWL’s major spring fundraiser, Couture for a Cause.

This year’s giving theme is “Help a Child…Change a Community,” according to YWL Vice President Amy Fields. “As we evaluate grant requests, we confirm that the charities meet this theme in a meaningful way. Our policy is to make grants to organizations with specific and identified needs, rather than make a general contribution to an administrative account.”

One recipient will be buildOn, an organization that has constructed 587 schools worldwide, with more than 84,000 children, parents and grandparents attending these schools every day.

Other children-focused organizations earmarked to receive funds from the YWL this year are Inspirica, STAR, and Blessings in a Backpack.
