Those two New Canaan events will be just two of 259 events in 152 Connecticut towns to celebrate National Trails Day. This vast array of events makes for the largest National Trails Day celebrations in the nation.

From 9:30 to noon Saturday, volunteers will help with trail maintenance at the nature center. A cook-out lunch will follow. Then, from 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a beginner's lesson in the use of maps and compasses on the Nature Center’s new orienteering course. All are invited to join a guided nature walk around the 44-acre property after the lesson and test their new skills.

Staff members Michelle Piazza and Jen Rayher will be leading the day’s activities.

Check in is at the Visitor Center’s front desk at 144 Oenoke Ridge in New Canaan. The event is sponsored by New Canaan Nature Center. It will be held rain or shine.

The Nature Center recommends preregistering for the events. For information or to preregister, contact Michelle Piazza at 203-966-9577, Ext. 42, or via email at mpiazza@newcanaannature.org.
