NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- A total of $21,000 in grant money is planned to be spread among six New Canaan nonprofit organizations through an effort by Stamford-based First County Bank Foundation to support local services.

In announcing the grants, First County officials said the organizations selected provide essential services to the communities they serve.  The largest grants -- $5,000 each -- went to Waveny Life Care Network for elder care programs and Getabout, a senior rides program.

In addition, The Community Fund of New Canaan, Arts for Healing program, and New Canaan Mounted Troop Inc. each received $2,500 grants. Silvermine Arts Center got a $3,500 grant for its Art Partners outreach program.

First County Bank Foundation officials said the organization has awarded more than $7.5 million in grants since its inception in 2001. Grants have gone to local organizations in Stamford, New Canaan, Greenwich, Norwalk, Darien and Westport.

“First County Bank Foundation is celebrating its 15th anniversary of supporting community-based charitable organizations which provide essential services to improve the lives of people in the local communities they serve,” said Reyno A. Giallongo, Jr., president of First County Bank Foundation. “It’s exciting to be part of an organization which works together with these charities to ensure basic needs are met.”

Sara Tucker, Nicole Konaman, Stacy Gendels and Caroleigh Evarts of New Canaan Mounted Troop were presented with a $2,500 grant from First County Bank Foundation by David VanBuskirk, AVP, business banking at First County Bank. New Canaan Mounted Troop provides equestrian therapeutic programs for youths with special needs.

To be eligible for First County Bank Foundation grants, organizations must have nonprofit tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Also, organizations must be located in Stamford, Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk or Westport, and show a history of providing services for community needs along with fiscal responsibility.
