NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Connecticut Magazine ranked New Canaan as the state's third best town to live in as part of its annual "Rating the Towns" feature.

New Canaan was ranked as the third best town to live in by Connecticut Magazine's "Rating the Towns" feature.

The magazine's ranking featured a different breakdown than from years past. Instead of splitting up towns by population size, the publication split the towns up based on median home sale price. New Canaan was part of a 37-town group that boasts a median home sale price of more than $300,000.

In addition to median home sale price, Connecticut Magazine weighed crime rates, graduation rates, the equalized mill rate, PIC rating, the number of restaurants that made the publications "Best Restaurants" list and voter turnout when determining the ranking.

New Canaan was strongest in the education and economic categories, ranking second in each, but the town was held back a bit by 13th and 11th place rankings in crime and community engagement respectively.

Ridgefield and Darien edged out New Canaan for the top two spots in the rankings. Fairfield county dominated the top of the list with Wilton, Greenwich, Weston and Westport ranking third through seventh, respectively.

Easton ranked 12th, Fairfield placed 17th and Redding tied for 21st.

Stamford was ranked the top city in the state, followed by Norwalk at No. 2 and Danbury at No. 3.
