New Canaan Retailers In Compliance On Tobacco Sales To Minors, Police Say

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- The New Canaan Police Department and staff members of the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program recently conducted unannounced compliance inspections of establishments that sell tobacco products.

The inspections on June 17 were performed in an effort to determine compliance with state laws concerning the prohibition of the sale of cigarettes and/or tobacco products to children younger than 18.

An underage youth employed by the Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program entered the establishments and attempted to purchase tobacco products, according to a press release.

A total of nine unannounced compliance inspections were conducted. All nine establishments were in compliance and did not sell tobacco to the undercover youth, according to a press release. 

These are the nine New Canaan establishments that were found to be in compliance:

  • Food Emporium, 280 Elm St.
  • Best Cellars, 282 Elm St.
  • Mobil Station, 16 South Ave.
  • Stewarts Spirits, 227 Elm St.
  • Gulf Station, 36 South Ave.
  • Walgreens, 36 Pine St.
  • Vegetable Barn, 22 Cross St.
  • MacKenzie’s, 7 South Ave.
  • Mobil Station, Merritt Parkway (south)
