NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan's Brian Williams, who has kept a very low profile since he was suspended last month by NBC News, showed up at a weekend fundraiser to support his high school alma mater, according to the Two River Times .

Williams was a member of the Class of 1977 at Mater Dei Prep, a four-year Catholic high school in Middletown, N.J. The school is reportedly in danger of closing down unless it can raise $1 million by June, the report said.

“This is Mater Dei. It’s been a very, very important part of my life. I had four great years here. I did not know it then, but it was the last degree I’d ever earn,” Williams was quoted as saying at the Save the Seraphs Gala at the Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands. “It’s a wonderful school, and it should be open for a long time, for everybody.”

It was the first public appearance by Williams, who attended with his wife Jane Stoddard, since the storm over disputed claims of his experiences covering the Iraq war. On Feb. 10, he was suspended for six months without pay from his position as anchor and managing editor of the "NBC Nightly News."

Williams came under fire after making a statement on the news clarifying that he "incorrectly remembered details in a 2003 reporting mission to Iraq."

In a piece that aired on "Nightly News," Williams said that he was in a military helicopter that took on enemy fire. But Williams days later told viewers he had made a mistake in recalling the incident, saying that he and his team were actually in an aircraft that was following the helicopter that was hit.

Lester Holt is sitting in as anchor on "NBC Nightly News" while the network investigates Williams over the Iraq war story and other issues.
